CODE ENFORCEMENT

Doug Smith, Code Enforcement Officer, reported that he and Assistant Code Enforcement Officer Jeb Brady attended a State of VA Codes Change Update in Hampton, VA over the past week.

Doug also "chaired" an Emergency Operations Plan meeting on Hurricanes with the Town Department Heads. The purpose of this meeting was to ascertain and assign specific assignments to the Town Department Heads in the event of adverse weather in the Cape Charles area. The point was made that when the determination is made to evacuate the area due to a Hurricane; citizens need to depart the area as quickly as possible. The Gazette will provide information regarding this potential situation; however the information is also contained on our Cape Charles Web site. Citizens are highly encouraged to read this information and prepare themselves for destructive weather ahead of time.

We are now in the Hurricane Season and adverse weather is likely to occur on the Eastern Shore and everyone needs to be "individually ready".

HARBOR

Smitty would like to remind everyone that the Schooner Fest 2008 is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, 2008 and the vessels GODSPEED & VIRGINIA (and possibly the SHALLOP) will be open to the public from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The Schooner Fest 2008 is being sponsored by New Ravenna, SunTrust and the Northampton County Chamber of Commerce. The party will start at 5:00 PM and end at 10:00 PM. Once again the fine food and marvelous drinks of the Eastern Shore of VA will be available. The Schooner Serenity will also be available for three trips that day. 12:00 noon, 2:30 PM and a sunset sail at 6:15 PM. The fabulous Jesse Chong Band and the always magnificent Dirt Road Band are the featured music.

Smitty said he expects a visit from VIMS over the next few weeks with the hopes of establishing our Harbor as a Virginia Clean Marina. Smitty and his staff of Kent Pruitt and Kathleen Stevens have been working extra hours to capture this honor.

PLANNING

Tom Bonadeo, Town Planner, reported that he has been working with our friends and neighbors at Bay Shore Concrete regarding cleaning up the water’s edge in and around their plant. Tom was scheduled to meet with VMRC to review the progress. The Town thanks Bay Shore Concrete for their efforts and cooperation.

Tom said that he completed a review of the Aqua deck addition for Bay Creek and is working with the steering committee on the Harbor Design Guidelines.

LIBRARY & TOWN CLERK

Ann Rutledge, Town Librarian, reported that the Toddler/Preschool Storytime had eight (8) children and their caregivers at that event. The theme for last week’s event was "Let’s Have Fun".

Ann said that the Library would like the Town’s citizens to know that they have a small collection of books written in Spanish. Our Spanish speaking public is welcome to these books and the Library welcomes any additional donations of books, tapes, DVD’s, & CD’s. Ann noted that many of the Spanish books contain the English translations and can be used as great tool for individuals studying Spanish. Some of the book titles are: Si Le Das Gallentita a Un Raton (If You Give A Mouse A Cookie), Con Mi Hermano (With My Brother), Oso Pardo, Oso Pardo, Que Veas Ahi? (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You see?), Anfibios! (Hurricanes!) and several other adult titles.

The Eastern Shore Public Library recently completed a study of space needs, contractual agreements, staffing etc. The results of that study can be found at http://www.espl.org/. John A. Moorman, Director of the Williamsburg Public Library is the author of this study. The public is encouraged to review this document.

Joy Pelletier, Town Clerk, reported that the Clerk’s Office was busy as usual with completing the paperwork required for the new hires for the Town’s Beach Patrol and conducting background checks for the Cape Charles Committee on Children & Youth (CCCCY) Mentors. Anyone who is interested in assisting Roberta Newman & Chuck Little with the CCCCY is requested to contact them at 757-331-3151. The CCCCY is looking for Volunteers to help them with their programs in the Park and Mentors to assist the children & youth in kayak building, cooking, camping, fishing, dancing and the Arts.

Joy said that the Town has been received several requests for information regarding the use of the Park & Beach for weddings and family events. Please note that the Town welcomes all visitors to the Park & Beach but DOES NOT allow open fires or grills at these locations due to safety and security reasons.

RECREATION

The Town has completed the interviews for the Town’s Youth Director Position. An announcement regarding that selection will be made this week. All of the candidates were excellent and the interviews were informative and very professional.

POLICE

Chief David Eder reported that the Cape Charles Police Department (CCPD) responded to an "out of Town" call for assistance on Friday, June 6, 2008 regarding a large crowd of unruly youths at a dance. No arrests were made by the CCPD but there was in excess of over 150 youths involved in the disturbance.

Chief Eder would like to remind everyone to register their bikes with the CCPD and said that the CCPD recovered six (6) bikes over the last week that were stolen over the past few weeks. Anyone missing a bike should contact Chief Eder at the CCPD station located directly across from the Eastern Shore Community College on Route 184.  Please bring Proof of Ownership and personal identification.

ASSISTANT TOWN MANAGER & TOWN MANAGER

Mayor Dora Sullivan has declared that the year 2009 is The Year of Children & Youth for the Town of Cape Charles and the Town is proud to be associated with the CCCCY who are carrying out the Mayor’s decree and offering the following:

The CCCCY is both proud & happy to announce the Cape Charles Summer Slam Basketball Tournaments at the Park on Saturday, July 12, Saturday, August 2 and Saturday, August 23, 2008. This will include Double Elimination Team Playoffs for ages 13 to 18, Shoot-Around Contest for ages 8 to 12 and a Free Throw Shooting Contest open to ALL ages. The CCCCY will be contacting local business owners for their support and sponsorship. The Town encourages the public to bring a lawn chair to these events and watch these gifted & talented athletes play this great sport.

The CCCCY will also sponsor Movie Nights at the Library starting on Wednesday, June 25 and every Wednesday until August 20, 2008.  The line up includes CLICK, FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF, HARRY POTTER & THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, I AM LEGEND, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, SHREK THE THIRD, SPIDERMAN 3, TRANSFORMERS AND THE MASK. The doors open at 7:00 PM and the Town will provide free popcorn & soda. Please note that attendance is limited to the first twenty-eight (28) people due to space limitations & safety reasons.

PLEASE HELP MAKE THIS SUMMER FUN & SAFE FOR OUR CHILDREN & YOUTH OF CAPE CHARLES!

The Beach has a total of fourteen (14) trash barrels; seven (7) cement and seven (7) metal. Over the last few weeks the PWD has been finding kitchen trash, household debris and car parts in the cement trash cans. This is not the intent of these trash cans and it creates a health hazard and eyesore. Please use the trash cans at the Beach for what they were intended to be used for and report ALL illegal dumping to the Town Hall at 757-331-3259 X 10. The Beach is a public and Town asset and we need to protect it.

Thank you again for the privilege and opportunity to serve this great Town and all the citizens here.

"The public can not be too curious concerning the characters of public men"
